Your Favorite Character, Actor or Skit From Old SNL

Haven't watched show in years but back in the day it was certainly must see TV. Everyone from college dorms to bars and elsewhere seems to have been watching.

John Belush was such a talent.

Garrett Morris seems to have not had much of a career after SNL. What's up with that?

The Society for really stupid people when Candace Bergen screws up and Gilda calls her out on it only making her laugh more.

No, SNL is rarely funny now, nor has been in decades. But original and much of vintage stuff is funny as hell.

They've kept things going far too long IMHO. SNL is no longer fresh and quality of actors isn't what it once was. This and of course in today's PC/equality/inclusive culture much of what went on in old SNL just wouldn't fly.

Another honorable mention; Father Guido Sarducci!

Are Phil Hartman and Jan Hooks "old" SNL? Because they're my favorites of all time.

The one where mute Gilda is in child therapy and chooses the tape dispenser as the “doll” that represents her.

I used to stay up til 1am, as a 7-year-old, on the off chance that Roseann Roseannadanna would make an appearance. Gilda was the greatest!

Gilda Radner stays in character and holds things together while Candace Bergen loses her shit early and just never gets back into character.

Young'uns have no idea what a big deal SNL was in its first three or four years.

People rave about Gilda Radner, but it seems to me she played every one of her characters in exactly the same way.

I assume her early death has more to do with people's love for her. She mostly just looks smug and all too pleased with herself in her performances.

R10 needs to be redone nowadays on behalf of MAGAry Taylor Greene, BoBo and many other Repuglicans.

- Favorite running skits:

"Hot Tub/ James Brown" spoof; and

"Cil My Landlord" both featuring Eddie Murphy, a deeply flawed but occasionally brilliant individual.

- The classic "race" skits with Richard Pryor and Chevy Chase in a word response session and, Murphy again, in another classic depicting how White bus passengers behave in the absence of Black riders.

Ashton Kutcher's " Death By Chocolate" vignettes were also personal favorites.

I still laugh out loud rewatching Harry Styles and Addy in "My Dog is My Boyfriend" and the Daniel Craig skits (a drunken James Bond shooting craps and "Chef Clive") in Craig's stint as host in the last SNL episode pre-covid lockdown.

Gilda Radner as Rosanne Rosanna Danna....the best!

Of the more recent years, this is one of my favorites, of course it taps directly into childhood trauma and wish fulfillment of what it could really have been. In retrospect, it is these polished satirical takes on commercials and consumerism where most of their strongest writing and production have taken place and are my favorite of all recent skits. Being a live show, I’m not sure exactly what that says, but I’d watch a hundred of these before watching another game show skit.

Neither SNL or anyone else could get away with skit in R17 today.

I would have also picked Phil Hartman

Phil Hartman, another great life cut short due to needless drama.

Not only does Gilda not break, she actually leans into Candace's goof, and makes the sketch even funnier than it was scripted.

Another great Gilda sketch that would never fly today.
