I love the music which is incongruous with a depressing moment and miserable story

It would be hard to forget the title.

I didn't like the stenciled lettering, but beyond that, the "looking for dick to lick" theme came through, especially given it takes place in 1976. It's a shame it had to end the way it did. Was it based on someone's life?

I was 13-14 my father took me to the mall to get a haircut and money for it. Somehow I returned to the car with no haircut or money but a copy of the book Looking For Mr. Goodbar. I remember dad wasn't pleased and I remember later that evening while starting to read the book ( yes somehow I was able to keep it) reading the back blurb " a journey of a woman's sexual ....." I forget the rest but I can still remember what my father must have thought when he took a look at what I bought instead of a haircut. And yes why can they make the internet and iphones but can't release this movie on Blu Ray or DVD.

The real story is more depressing than a glamorous Diane Keaton hooking up with Richard Gere.

Her apartment was far from glamorous - it was a bit over the top to tell the truth, it looked like a dungeon.

I believe somewhere or other you can see photos of the real murder scene, including the blood. DLers have a way of finding these things.

R5 I read on here it was problems over the music rights, as it used a few big 70s hits?
Did you have to wait weeks for your haircut or did your Pop give you the $2?
| by Anonymous | reply 11 | June 17, 2023 12:47 PM |
Murder scene - it was a mess, but nothing like in the movie.

R12 how was she ever going to get fucked with all that crap on her bed?
| by Anonymous | reply 13 | June 17, 2023 1:03 PM |
Very sad photo of her parents. Wonder what they thought of the movie.

The trailer makes me think of the opening credits for some steamy mid-70s TV miniseries potboiler by Sidney Sheldon. The role of Glenn Ford will be played by Richard Kiley.

Interesting and precise telling of the real story.

R12 - They call THAT a murder scene? Amateurs.

I'd forgotten how incredibly HOT Tom Berenger was once upon a time.

The real life killer was cute too, but couldn't get it up
| by Anonymous | reply 19 | June 17, 2023 1:20 PM |
Well, it was bony for Diane Keaton...
| by Anonymous | reply 20 | June 17, 2023 1:50 PM |
R19 - He was cute enough for a late night hookup. Little creepy looking, but that could just be contextual bias. His name was John Wayne Wilson (no relation to the actor or John Wayne Gacy), and he was only 23 at the time. A transient with a police record.

Looks fan-made. Richard Gere wasn't even a known name yet- why would he be in the credits? Feinstein who?...
I would've started it at the 00:49 second mark and heavily pared it down.

R21 He slightly resembles Barry Keoghan; also Christian Slater.

He probably asked to stay until tomorrow.

The ending was really grisly. R5 what age were you when you got the book? Was it racy or did it skim over the sex?
| by Anonymous | reply 25 | June 17, 2023 3:33 PM |
I read the book - it was plenty racy.

Any descriptions of hard cocks?

| by Anonymous | reply 29 | June 17, 2023 4:43 PM |
I think more a repressed homo, R29.
| by Anonymous | reply 30 | June 17, 2023 4:50 PM |
No wonder he couldn't get hard then, plus he was high
| by Anonymous | reply 32 | June 17, 2023 4:59 PM |
I feel like that was the one I saw in the cinema, before it hit 2nd run cinemas.
Using "backstabbers" is kind of tacky. Who was the killer in this, Atherton or Berenger? I can't remember.
That Freddie Fields has been around a LONG time.
Also, given the pace of things, it seemed faster then. It probably only seems slow in retrospect now. lol

Thanks to this thread I just found out this existed. And I thought I knew a lot about this movie! It looks lame, but Shelley Hack is in it!

The trailer was very much of its time and looks odd , funny and dated now but back in 1977 it was relevant.. Now, as for that soundtrack- yeessss!! This was a big movie back then- this was right around 'the time when Diane Keaton had a major career going with "Annie Hall"
| by Anonymous | reply 35 | June 17, 2023 7:56 PM |
"Backstabbers"? The poor girl was asphyxiated, she was only 28 and worked as teacher. There is no cautionary tale, the sexual revolution meant many people picked up dates in bars and discos. Quinn was a regular at the bar she met her killer. She was mousy and usually had her head in a book. Her killer was married and had a kid in addition to being gay. Depressing story. Groovy movie soundtrack.

R36 wasn't she stabbed many times?

Someone's posted the whole soundtrack album on YT and the actual movie at the end. Hope the link works and that you see it as a playlist.

I may be confusing the novel with real life events, in the book the killer chokes her

R34 that was quite a swift career comedown for George Segal, wasn’t it?
| by Anonymous | reply 41 | June 17, 2023 8:52 PM |
Must have been the book. The movie has Diane stabbed as that annoying light flicks on and off. I think she even is showing a tit

I'm redoing it as, "Looking For Mr. Gay Bar". I play a teacher of Aspergers children who haunts pickup joints at night.

R22 No, that was the actual trailer. I remember seeing the trailer at the theater when I was about 15 and wishing I was old enough to see the movie because I wanted to see Tom Berenger naked in it.

Re George Segal:
The first time he sniffed cocaine, he thought, oh my God, this is it, I have now experienced euphoria, I'm smarter than anybody, I'm king of the world. It was good. That one time. After that, he went on doing it until his teeth were grinding together, but he never had the high again. "Look," he says, sweetly reasonably, "if there wasn't an up side, people wouldn't do it. There's no point in denying it. No point in saying, 'Just Say No', like people are a bunch of sheep who do it because their friends snort. Say No doesn't hack it. You take it, you get to be king of the world, and then you find that coke is an entirely loveless and destructive drug and you chase it for a while and then you stop." Then he started having panic attacks, or, in the vernacular, episodes of acute anxiety, where he'd find himself lying on the floor in the foetal position, shaking and whimpering. ... Film work fell off for him in the early 80s.

I assume the trailer was released well in advance of the film's release and that Paramount Pictures was unsure how to market it. Surprisingly t Feinstein, Atherton, Gere and Berenger are identified in the trailer.
