The 2000s were an incredibly lucrative time for comedian Dane Cook. By 2009, Cook had released four comedy albums, broken the Laugh Factory’s endurance record, and starred alongside Steve Carell, Jason Biggs, Alec Baldwin, Jessica Simpson, and Kate Hudson in high-performing productions like Good Luck Chuck, My Best Friend’s Girl, Employee of the Month, and Dan in Real Life.

Unfortunately, Cook’s tenure as a comedy sensation lapsed as quickly as it started. At the height of his success, the comedian suffered a series of professional and personal tragedies that completely altered the trajectory of his career.
Of these, the 50-year-old’s controversial beef with disgraced comic, Louis C.K., is arguably the most memorable. We take a look at how Dane Cook and Louis C.K.’s feud started and was ultimately resolved.
Louis C.K. Publicly Accused Dane Cook Of Stealing His Jokes
Before the New York Times brought to light damning allegations of misconduct against him, the biggest controversy surrounding Louis C.K. was his longstanding beef with Dane Cook.
For close to four years (2007-2011), Cook was repeatedly accused of stealing multiple jokes from Louis C.K.’s Live in Houston and co-opting it for his album, Retaliation. Cook vehemently denied the allegations on multiple platforms, including a June 2010 episode of WTF.
“I didn’t steal anything from Louis C.K.,” Cook told Marc Maron. “How can I really convey to people so that they understand? I’ve never stolen anything in my life,” he insisted. “I’m not a thief.”

Despite publicly accusing Cook of stealing the material, C.K. appeared to backtrack in a 2010 interview with Movieline. “I’m not sure he stole [the material]. I don’t know that. … I think it’s possible he might have seen these bits and absorbed them, and not known that he took them from me. I worry about that myself sometimes. It’s hard to know where your thoughts come from, especially when you have a thirst for material because you need it professionally.”
How Dane Cook And Louis C.K. Finally Ended Their Feud
Dane Cook and Louis C.K.’s four-year beef culminated in an on-screen confrontation on an episode of Louis C.K.’s semi-autobiographical series, Louie, where the two finally hashed out their dispute. Cook disclosed to Last Laugh that he was relieved when Louis finally gave him a chance to resolve the longstanding feud.
"It was so old hat, and it was pretty boring, and I know he was as tired of getting asked about it as I was,” Cook admitted. “And so when he called me up and said, 'Hey, do you want to put this to bed in an episode of the show?' I was like, 'Oh my goodness, yes.'"

It seems both Cook and Louis were ready to end the controversy surrounding the stolen jokes at the time. "It’s just like I'm moving on, and we're all ready to talk about something else,” Cook disclosed.
“But there was, I guess, an infatuation with the internet at that time of people battling each other, or having a difference of opinion,” he continued. “But it had grown into this thing where we wanted to take back the story. I think that for what it was, it was one of the most compelling moments in television I think in several years. It was pretty wild."
How Did Dane Cook React To Louis C.K.’s Assault Scandal?
Despite resolving the longstanding feud, Dane Cook found himself a target for news outlets amid the Louis C.K. misconduct scandal. "I think that people expected [me to react], because I had a moment with Louis, but it's not comparable to whatever else that was,” Cook admitted to Last Laugh. “That has nothing to do with two comics arguing over a bit. So, how I felt about it was, that I didn't really feel anything either way for it. It didn't make me feel very good in any regard."
Despite his antagonistic relationship with Louis, Cook decided not to comment on the allegations. “I didn’t speak out,” Cook disclosed to The Hollywood Reporter. “All I can say is that nothing Louis did to me is anywhere near what happened between him and those women. Yeah, it sucked what happened to me, but I knew what I did and didn’t do.”
As for his state of mind at the time, Cook confessed to Last Laugh, "I just remember feeling like there's nothing good coming out of this moment right now. For me, maybe at that point in my life, I'd had enough therapy that it was like, that's not my experience to understand first-hand, because I wasn't there on either side of it."
