OnlyFans has made headlines today after it was announced that the adult website will no longer allow explicit content on its platform. Critics were quick to blame actor Bella Thorne.

It was recently reported that OnlyFans will be going through a major rebrand, removing all "sexually explicit" content from the website. Many were confused by this change as the website is already well-established as a pornography hub.

Bloomberg writes, "Starting in October, the company will prohibit creators from posting material with sexually explicit conduct on its website, which many sex workers use to sell fans explicit content." Social media users have found themselves upset as they are under the impression that this rebrand is to appease more "puritan" populations. Rather than serving as a consensual site for sex workers to earn an income, OnlyFans will now be geared towards entrepreneurs, musicians, public figures, and others who are interested in charging a fee for access to exclusive content.

Twitter is associating this change with Bella Thorne's 2020 controversy where she used her platform as a famous actor to swindle money out of subscribers. As recapped by The Guardian, she promised a $200 level of subscribers "nude images," only to distribute images of herself suggestively posting in lingerie. In response, OnlyFans received an influx of refund requests. Following "thousands of refunds, processing costs, and wasted time later," the site made its first of many changes, capping the amount of money that creators were allowed to charge and be tipped.

Devastated and hurt by OnlyFans' latest change, many Twitter users took to the platform to express their thoughts and long-lasting anger towards Thorne. One critic wrote, "Hey where’s Bella Thorne in all this OnlyFans drama? I thought she wanted to be the big celebrity to help remove the stigma behind sex work? OH that’s right she only cares when she’s making the $$ and doesn’t have to worry about actual SWers lives and income."

Another expressed, "OnlyFans is going to ban sexually explicit content now? Thanks, Bella Thorne!"

"When Bella Thorne scammed her subscribers out of $2M and made OnlyFans change their payout policies, it was all downhill from there," wrote a third.

One fan came to the 23-year-old actor's defense, writing, "Don’t be stupid trying to blame Bella Thorne for this OnlyFans drama. They’re banning porn on OnlyFans because it turned poor people into successful entrepreneurs. This is an attack on poor people and sex workers."

At the time of her controversy, Throne wrote a brief apology that remained unaccepted by many. As of now, she has not issued a statement about this latest wave of criticism.

Update: Bella Thorne's representation responded to this article, requesting that we add, "The notion that OnlyFans changed its payment and tipping policies because of Bella is simply not true. In fact, OnlyFans released a statement saying that Ms. Thorne had nothing to do with the decision."

OnlyFans statement (August 2020), per LA Times: "We can confirm that any changes to transaction limits are not based on any one user. Transaction limits are set to help prevent overspending and to allow our users to continue to use the site safely. We value all of the feedback received since this change was implemented and we will continue to review these limits.”

Many critics and sex workers still remain unconvinced.
