Britney Spears' world was rocked after her breakup with Justin Timberlake. The "Toxic" singer revealed in her memoir (via Billboard), "When I say, devastated, I mean, I could barely speak for months. Whenever anyone asked me about him, all I can do is cry. I don't know if I was clinically in shock, but it felt that way." The two had been together for nearly three years, so it makes sense as to why the pop singer was crushed by the breakup. But for Spears, it wasn't just that Timberlake broke up with her, but the way he did it.
As we know, the "Cry Me a River" sent Spears a breakup text while she was on the set of the "Overprotected" remix video. For years, people knew Timberlake split from the pop princess via text, but no one knew what he sent.
However, in October 2023, on the heels of her memoir release, Chris Applebaum, the director of the "Overprotected" remix, revealed the harsh way Timberlake called it quits from Spears. Per Page Six, it came down to two words. Applebaum explained that after visiting Spears' trailer, she broke the news the singer had dumped her. She said, "I can't believe it. Look it. This happened." Spears then showed the director the text, and two words blared through the screen, simply saying, "It's over!!!" Yikes, quite a cruel way to end a nearly three-year relationship!
