Looks like there is going to be a sequel to the Netflix award-winning and applauded historical drama, The Crown.

It has been reported that plans for a £500million run of prequels are set to be happening over at the streaming service.

Peter Morgan Working On Historical Spin-off Series

The Crown writer, Peter Morgan is reported to be currently working on up to five historical spin-off series.

The new series' will begin with the death of Victoria in 1901 and cover the abdication crisis after Edward VIII fell in love with Wallis Simpson, and the rise of socialism and fascism in Europe. It will also cover the Spanish Flu, the Suffragette movement and the lives of politicians Gladstone and Churchill.

The Crown is the most-awarded British show in television history, scooping 21 Emmy Awards with 2 more seasons set to air about the current reigning Elizabeth II.

The drama is also one of the most expensive shows ever made for television. Each ten-part season cost £100million, meaning that the prequels may cost £500million.

Prequel Set To Take Place Before Elizabeth II's Reign

A source told the Daily Mail: "This is a bit like Star Wars where the opportunity is to extend the franchise by dipping into history. It is going to start with the death of Queen Victoria and will run up to around about where The Crown began, which was with the wedding of the Queen in 1947.

Netflix are really keen to make more of The Crown and Peter Morgan is excited by the possibilities of the era."

It is believed that Morgan, who is Oscar-nominated for writing The Queen and Frost/Nixon, has outlines and is currently planning new series for the streaming platform. According to Variety, these reports a speculative, and there are very few details about the project.

The prequels are thought to be between three or five seasons long, as every season of The Crown covers ten years. The period is expected to cover four kings in the 50 years after the death of Queen Victoria, including the abduction.

Season 5 of The Crown is set to stream in November, with a new cast taking over to portray the royals through the 1990s. Imelda Staunton is replacing Olivia Colman to play Queen Elizabeth, Jonathan Pryce Prince Philip, Lesley Manville Princess Margaret. Dominic West will play Prince Charles, Elizabeth Debicki the late Princess Diana, and Olivia Williams as Camilla Parker Bowles. The cast will are expected to start filming season 6 this August.
