Question about draperies

I want to purchase and install blackout draperies in my bedroom. I'd like them to be ceiling-to-floor and able to be opened easily by pulling on a cord on the side. Any suggestions? I don't even know what these are called, but I'd like them to be really nice and also really able to keep any sunlight out. I might want to have sheer curtains beneath them to give the room a softer feel during the day.

Amazon has them look under blackout curtains and what color you want and size. I got some for my bedroom.

I had mine custom-made when I lived in Atlanta. I went to fabric store and asked the counter help if they could recommend someone. The person I hired was a contract worker for Delta Air Lines who sewed seat re-coverings. Still using them 20 years later. Oh, and I picked the fabric.

WOW ! I remember in the 80s and 90s, when people cared about the decor of their homes and window treatments, there were custom drapery departments in most every major department store (JC Penney, Macy's, etc.). There were even upholstery / drapery shops in most major cities. Designers would come to your home , take measurements and show you fabrics and styles. Now everyone buys crap at WalMart and Target and hang it (crooked) in their windows - because it's cheap and easy.

YES! That's exactly what I DON'T want to do. I really don't want to just order something from Pottery Barn and hang it myself. I want these draperies to be nice, attractive, and hung properly so they look the way they should.

OP, just be careful, a lot of curtains claim they are "blackout" and they aren't. Thick drapes arent enough, it needs to also have a thick white lining on the inside.

Forgot to mention, my drapery maker made my custom-order, floor-to-ceiling blackout drapes and the box valences.

Came over and installed everything In the four windows in my bedroom. Wasn't cheap but I got exactly what I wanted.

I took them with me when I left Atlanta and they are currently hanging in my home.

Just make sure the draperies match the carpet.

do they have to be drapes? I have Hunter Douglas blackout pleated shades but never closed them all the way. I have the top down and bottom up so when I open them more I only open the top part. I just recently started closing them all the way and was surprised how well they work. When I wake up I think it is still early and when I open the shades realize the sun is out. You could them put a regular drape over them. Other than that I am not sure what you want help with. You said you wanted blackout drapes so what help do you need?

You may need to actually hire an interior decorator for the job - he / she will know who to contact to get exactly what you want. And he / she may give you some ideas you never imagined. It'll be pricey, but it's the way to go.

Remember to keep in mind the noise factor. For the ultimate in curtained luxury, you really should consider completely silent curtain rod rings.

I'm trying to do the same thing. What do you call the type of curtain rod or part that curves towards the window at the end so the curtain goes all the way to the wall and no light sneaks in on the side?

We live in Florida, it’s always a tinge humid so we did away with fabric that can might get musty or attract allergens and went with plantation blinds. They block about 95% of the light and the top four louvres can be opened separately, allowing light yet keeping the bottom ones shut for privacy. There’s no dowels, pulls, eye hooks or extraneous hardware on the frames anymore, all the mechanisms are contained within the shutter body itself, allowing for clean unfettered lines that actually make the windows look bigger.

They come in and custom size them, it was about $2500 for all five of our windows, covers the window frame all the way around, and really look clean and modern.

How about a vinyl roller shade? Size it so that it fits inside the window frame. It would probably block out light better than curtains. That way you wouldn't have to worry about the draperies being thick enough. Though you would need a valance to cover up the roller shade.
