In case anyone was wondering, this is the matchup that caused Jeremy and I to create Flickchart in the first place. We looked at IMDB's Top 250 list and saw Pulp Fiction listed higher than Empire, and decided that if most people were shown the two movies side by side, the result might shake out differently. All that being said - EMPIRE, FOR THE WIN!
on 7/10/2009
Hmm, it is still an interesting decision, and pretty close...
on 7/10/2009
Empire of course wins (in my book), but I still feel it will be a close call with many people.
on 7/10/2009
I love that this is the matchup that resulted in the creation of my new favorite addiction. Of course Empire Wins.
on 7/14/2009
Very very very close call. Empire, by a nose.
on 7/21/2009
you people are killing me!
on 8/24/2009
Going with 'Empire', just because 'Pulp Fiction' isn't my favorite Tarantino film.
on 10/21/2009
This match created Flickchart? Well then I've got to vote, don't I? Tough call indeed, but Empire has Yoda.
on 11/6/2009
Empire 'til death!!!!
on 11/19/2009
Tarantino might be overrated, and Pulp Fiction might not be his best work, but he's not nearly overrated to the same extent as the Star Wars trilogy.
on 3/19/2010
Inspired Flickchart, eh? I'll throw my two cents in then. Pulp Fiction is terrifically entertaining. It took some really lurid subject matters, and made them fun. It's narratively interesting. It's stylistically interesting. It has great performances from perfectly cast actors. But Empire is the greatest film of its kind ever made. It has some of the most exciting action setpieces ever. It has a strong emotional element. Romance, betrayal, lasers, lightsabers, tauntauns; what doesn't this movie have? Empire.
on 4/11/2010
No Star Wars movie could touch Pulp Fiction, imo.
on 4/28/2010
Pulp Fiction is the pretty easy choice for me here. I like the Star Wars movies but never got as obsessed with them as many people did. Tarantino is an amazing director and Pulp Fiction was incredibly inventive and entertaining.
on 4/28/2010
Honey Bunny there is no choice but the film that describes the pleasures of a foot message and a Royale with Cheese.
on 4/28/2010
Honey Bunny there is no choice but the film that describes the pleasures of a foot massage and a Royale with Cheese.
on 4/29/2010
I don't get the Tarantino obsession. And while I'm so over Star Wars (and I also haven't seen Pulp Fiction in a VERY long time), this is a no-hesitation choice for me.
on 6/24/2011
Two of the best movies ever made, although I gotta say Empire walks away with this one.
on 7/13/2011
PULP vs. EMPIRE is like choosing between your two fully flawless children. PULP has the best dialogue I have seen and heard in a film and has quite a lineup of incredibly talented actors. Empire is the best sequel I've seen besides TDK, and that only comes once in a blue moon...Pulp has discussions about Royales with cheese, foot massages, and five dollar shakes. Empire has twisted tales of a father to a son and the Jedi training...this is seriously tough, but I'm going with PULP FICTION and all of its awesome discussions on pop culture.
on 7/13/2011
Empire. Case closed....
on 2/4/2012
Both in my top 10 but The Empire Strikes Back is in my top 4 so im gonna have to go with it
on 2/16/2012
The Empire Strikes Back by a mile. It is loads better.
on 3/10/2012
Empire Strikes Back is the true winner.
on 4/12/2012
i say pulp fiction. but if i was older and saw empire upon its release, i wouldve probably loved it and it would win. but ive grown up in a different time, and empire simply doesnt impress me. it is thirty years old. i respect it, but it simply does not stand up to the ecstacy of pulp fiction. the yound calf wins in this bout.
on 4/13/2012
This is a tough decision. I grew up watching Star Wars and Empire is a great film, my opinion the best of the series. Though Pulp Fiction is a movie of excellence. Their are few films that can compare to Pulp Fiction, its Pulp Fiction's refrencces to Pop Culture which make the film and that is why Pulp Fiction wins over Empire
on 5/21/2012
Pulp Fiction wins this.
on 5/21/2012
There are few movies I would choose over The Empire Strikes Back, but Pulp Fiction is one of those movies.
on 5/21/2012
Empire Strikes Back is a ton of fun, but Pulp Fiction is a better film.
on 6/22/2012
Empire wins, Pulp Fiction is great but Empire is better.
on 7/12/2012
Empire over Pulp for me.
on 7/12/2012
Allow me for the moment to break the tie.I vote is for Pulp Fiction,it was a big game changer for me in how movies can be made & stories can be told.More movies on my flickchart that I like were influenced by Pulp Fiction than Empire Strikes Back. However I'm sure folks who choose Empire have many movies high on their chart that were greatly influenced by Empire Strikes Back.I'm just a bigger fan of the Pulp Fiction syle than the Empire Strikes back style of film that's all
on 9/18/2012
The Empire Strikes Back all the way!
on 9/18/2012
I wouldn't consider either among my favorites, but Empire scores around 50% on my engagement/care meter when I watch it, Pulp Fiction around 1%.
on 9/18/2012
Oh and Pulp Fiction wasn't that damn groundbreaking. Godard anyone?
on 9/18/2012
Definitely Pulp. It's been my favorite movie for a very long time now and I don't think it'll be beat for quite sometime, unless Django Unchained has the capability to be the greatest thing I've ever seen.
on 12/9/2012
Empire wins undeniably. The best Star Wars film ever made.
on 12/29/2012
Empire. To this day it probably is my favorite movie of all time. Probably. Flickchart's at least telling me it is, so whatever. Raiders is a very close second, and may actually dethrone it some day. Anyway, Empire. It's a perfect combination of action, amazing special effects, interesting characters, great designs, music, suspense, romance, drama, comedy, pacing, acting, just everything. Everything.
on 1/14/2013
Two awesome movies but in the end I might give the edge to ESB.
on 3/11/2013
Sorry Luke, you lose this one.
on 6/26/2013
The Empire Strikes Back by a wide margin.
on 6/27/2013
Pulp Fiction wins this for sure. One of the best film ever made.
on 6/27/2013
For all its narrative issues, Empire. I don't think it's even close.
on 12/27/2013
The Empire Strikes Back will always triumph over the glamorous style of Tarantino
on 2/14/2014
This is a super-tough choice, as both of them are more-or-less perfect films, but I'll have to go with Pulp Fiction.
on 2/19/2014
Damn... the comparison that caused the creation of this lovely site, if I'm not mistaken and the comparison is in total balance (20 apiece). Well, I'll happily and easily give the edge to Pulp Fiction. Not a big fan of the Star Wars movies and on the other hand, I rank Pulp Fiction #6 in my all-time list.
on 3/7/2014
Tarantino will never touch the original trilogy of Star wars. Never
on 3/20/2014
tough tough choice but i think it has to be star wars
on 4/14/2014
Pulp Fiction is my tast
on 5/29/2014
John Travolta and Samuel L Jackson are no match for the Empire
on 6/21/2014
EMPIRE no contest!
on 6/29/2014
Empire Strikes Back easy!
on 10/6/2014
Star Wars is always something I think about when someone mentions movies. It has always been a part of me. Pulp Fiction is a brilliant movie but unfortunately loses.
on 10/12/2014
Best Tarantino against best Star wars. Tarantino wins.
on 4/28/2015
Pulp Fiction > Every Star Wars film.
on 8/5/2015
Pulp Fiction is easily the most quotable movie ever. It features one of the best scripts in cinematic history. It has an all-star cast filled with some of the most talented actors of that generation and all deliver truly memorable performances. With all that said, it should win. I mean, how can it not, right? And yet Empire wins. It does. And without even a single shred of doubt. I should at least look at the matchup for a while, because Pulp Fiction is a damn incredible film. But Empire is just too good, almost half a level above Pulp Fiction, and yet the only film between these two is The Godfather Part II. Empire is my number 6 (maybe 5 soon, if Shawshank doesn't perform as well on my inevitable upcoming viewing) and Fiction is my number 8. It should be really freaking close. It usually is when it only separates 1-2 spots between movies. Empire just happens to belong to the deluxe-first class level of movies. There are only about 5 other films I have seen that matches/exceeds Empire (and if you count The Lord of the Rings as just one movie, then it's only 3...). Pulp Fiction certainly is fair game, but it cannot beat Empire.....it just can't.
on 8/5/2015
Pulp fiction and it is not even close.Pulp fiction beats every star wars film
on 12/23/2015
My actual #1 vs #2; happily the two movies that started it all; Empire Strikes Back holds up very well as "BEST. STAR WARS. MOVIE. EVER."; in fact, it's epic. But, Pulp Fiction is a untouchable movie Imo.
on 6/22/2016
The Empire Strikes Back
on 1/14/2018
From the history of this matchup, I don’t think I’m honourable enough to make a comment on it!
on 5/27/2018
Empire nails Pulp...
on 10/2/2018
I meant Pulp Fiction by miles.
on 10/2/2018
In a manner wholly befitting his username, Cxfatesniper8ck has sealed the fate of this match-up. We can safely say that both IMDB and Flickchart would rate Pulp Fiction higher than Empire. There, now that that's been settled, this site has fulfilled the purpose of its creation, and can finally rest in peace.
on 11/15/2019
Episode V by miles.
on 11/15/2019
Sorry I messs up.
on 1/10/2020
This is a tough decision. Pulp Fiction in a close one.
on 7/6/2020
Pulp Fiction is a far greater movie than Empire. Pulp Fiction takes this.
on 9/30/2020
Both are masterpieces and both are easily in the top 5 movies of all time IMO. I have Pulp Fiction at #2 and The Empire Strikes back at #3 on my list. So I'll go with Pulp Fiction right now, though that could easily change in the future.
on 10/1/2020
This seems like a silly joke...
on 3/8/2021
The great combination of rude violence and nonlinear arthouse film wins.
on 5/8/2022
I like Pulp Fiction as much as the next person, but it's not my favorite Tarantino movie; ESB otoh IS' my favorite Star Wars movie.
on 5/8/2022
Return of the Jedi beats Pulp Fiction, while Pulp Fiction beats Empire and other Star Wars
on 9/21/2022
Star Wars because it made updates from the original.
on 9/25/2022
Tough one. ESB has a better soundtrack and one of the greatest villains of all time. It's complex, layered, dark, endlessly rewatchable, has one of the best twists ever, and appeals to literally everyone from children to adults. I think Pulp does catch up quite a bit from its superior script, story structure, cast, and timelessness. I think I'll give this to Empire, tho
on 9/27/2022
pulp fiction for me. Empire strikes back were good for me during the first few times I saw it but it has has a bit of a decline for me
on 9/27/2022
2 all time favorite but I think PF edges out here.
on 1/16/2023
empire strikes back is definitely the better movie but I need to watch it again. Pulp fiction wins for now
on 7/23/2023
As entertaining as Empire is, Pulp Fiction has to win here. A better screenplay has yet to be written.
on 10/30/2023
We all love Empire strikes back . Pulp fiction has just too many bad azz scenes and bad azz characters. If I was a kid then I would say ESB but I am not Pulp Fiction is just too bad MF film and ESB has aged a ton. Pulp for the win.
