This show is depressing and overrated 😴

Agreed, R3. It was good until it started using those godawful red herrings. The performances saved it from being a total shitshow.

R5 I was really surprised once I watched it because everyone made it out to be this amazing show when in reality none of the characters are likable and both the storylines and the visuals are depressing. All the characters do is be miserable yet don’t do anything to try to turn their situation around.

A second season of HBO’s 2021 sleeper hit limited series “Mare of Easttown” has yet to be confirmed by the network, but star Kate Winslet already has an idea of where a possible follow-up run would take the show.

Winslet, who won a Primetime Emmy Award for playing a rough-around-the-edges Philly-area cop in Brad Ingelsby’s crime series, recently told The Guardian that a second season would reflect the current crisis surrounding police brutality and wrongdoing. (Via Insider.)

“I don’t know if I’m going to be playing Mare again,” Winslet said. “But if we were to do a second season, then for sure these atrocities which have existed in the police force here and in America will find their way into the stories we tell. One hundred percent. You can’t pretend these things haven’t happened.” (The journalist specifically pointed to the 2020 police murder of George Floyd in the U.S. and 2021 rape and murder of Sarah Everard by a Metropolitan officer in the U.K.)

The hype reminds me of Happy Valley-- a show with idiosyncratic accents, gratuitous crying and a cookie-cutter plot. I turned it off in the second episode. I imagine I'd do the same with Mare of Easttown. The last season of Gomorra just came out and that was more my speed.

The show was doing good until it got lazy and introduced red herrings to substitute for the lack of suspense. Then blatantly copying scenes shot-to-shot from The Silence of the Lambs was unforgivable to me.

Jean Smart was excellent (as she always is in everything she plays), but Winslet's performance was overly-praised.
