Having lived in Berlin for several years I can say that there are a large number of straight women of a certain age there that look rather masculine (they often have short spiky hair, wear ugly sensible Earth shoes, etc.). It's also much more common there for women not to marry or have kids. I knew people that worked with her in the theatre, but I never heard any pertinent gossip (wasn't that interested, really). I think it could go either way.
