El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie

Who’s looking forward to another two hours of the gorgeous Jesse Pinkman? x

It genuinely looks good... like visually they've elevated things... my only question is the narrative and use of Cranston. I just hope the film can live up to the show's legacy.

R1 - I have complete faith that this movie’s going to be great. Breaking Bad never faltered and I don’t think they’d risk tampering with that unless they deemed this story good enough. x

As much as I hate Jesse, I’m glad to see that Aaron Paul is still working. I know he’s done Bojack Horseman, but other than that I haven’t heard much from him. He seems like a good guy. I’m mainly watching this in hopes of Gilligan addressing the White family in the aftermath of the show. There’s no way this worked out well for Skyler, even if she isn’t punished legally I’m sure Marie is going to hate her for the rest of her life. Not to mention how fucked up Walt Jr. must be after all this.

Cannot wait for this! I do argue that Jesse Pinkman is NOT gorgeous. Chris Hemsworth is gorgeous!💗

I would’ve rather that Walt had lived and Jessie had died at the Breaking Bad series ending. Jessie was a little bitch!!

R9 As much as I hate Jesse, Walter dying made sense. I do hate that they had Jesse escape and get to ride off into the sunset all happy while everybody else had to deal with the shit they’d been stepping in for five seasons. When he got hauled off to be a meth slave for months, that should have been the last we see of him. No rescue, no stupid happy (well, as happy as you can get considering) ending. Just him knowing that Walt killed Jane before he gets taken away and we never see him again. But Walt dying at the end was a good catharsis, and from a narrative standpoint it was understandable. I thought him dying from accidentally being shot with his own gun was too heavy-handed a metaphor though.

Wasn't a point made that there was only one road into and out of that ranch?

Then you see police cars racing in and Jesse racing out. It seems an existential fact that they would have to meet somewhere along the way.

I ended up disliking Jesse Pinkman (BB Spoiler) my favorites were Walt and Hank who are now dead unless they show them in flashbacks. But I am going to watch it tomorrow.

r21 I think so. I just got done watching it and did end up rooting for Jesse. It was a little slow in spots but it was like the series and a lot of the old cast was back (I won't give spoilers)

I just finished watching. I liked it, but I didn’t love it like I hoped I would. It ended as I expected it to. Really wish they made Jesse Plemons lose some weight because his fat ass kept taking me right out of the movie. Also, Walt looked off - terrible bald cap and moustache combo. x

I enjoyed watching it, but after it ends you are left feeling...what was the point?

Breaking Bad ends up Jesse driving off free, this movie ends with Jesse driving off free. Nothing was really gained by this movie except adding in some explanation of how a happy ending would be feasible for him, but the viewer was already to buy the happy ending.

That said, it is enjoyable to return to the Breaking Bad universe and see these characters, and Vince Gilligan hasn't lost his edge at all. But at the end of the day this was a project that didn't really need to happen.

Yeah, you couldn't help but think the guy doesn't look the same at all considering it was supposed to be a flashback. But life happens, not every actor is a Christian Bale that can easily yo-yo their weight for a role.

Completely pointless. It is basically “Precisely How Jesse, Freed from Bondage, Gets Out of Albuquerque” and takes us just a few days past BD’s ending. All of the actors (including those playing dead characters shown in flashbacks) look too much older to play their characters back in the same time as the original series, and Jesse Plemons looks like a different person. Speaking of whom, who exactly was thinking “what I really want is more Todd?”

I did enjoy Todd's easy listening 70's music. :)

Jesse's fingerprints are going to be all over that meth lab where all the dead bodies are. Hank arrested him. Cops are going to wonder about what happened to Pinkman since he's possibly tied to Hanks disappearance & death, but his body isn't with all the others.

Cannot stand mr Paul, he is creepy, needs to stay on his meds.

Vince is building a sense of dread as soon as Todd explains to Jesse they will be alone all weekend. The camera focuses on Jesse's face and his uncomfortable that sentence makes him. Then it is reinforced in scenes that follows where Jesse is nervously trying to figure out what exactly Todd wants from him.

How could the possibility of sexual assault not occur to you?! Its clearly a possibility left in the air, Vince masterfully let's the audience's mind race.

Yes, there are all sorts of macabre things I figured Todd might do but raping Jesse wasn’t one of them. I don’t see how it’s “clearly a possibility left in the air.”

The movie was often really slow and I had to fast forward several times. Would have been more interesting to see Skinny Pete's police interview than Jesse's endless search for the money in that apartment or some of these flashbacks. I'm also confused about the money. Why didn't Jesse try to find all the money? He left with that guys bag but why didn't he get the other 1/3? Where was that? They made millions and millions over the years and Jesse is basically broke after he escaped. Why didn't they have different hiding places, accounts (on the Caymans or something) , contacts, valuables (like diamonds), foreign properties etc. In this kind of business, you have to be prepared and they obviously never planned any of this. You leave prison (or this metal cage in the ground) after 20 years and you're completely broke. WTF?

I don't really remember Jesse's money situation on BB, but Walt was hiding most of his money in the desert in cash. Diversify for God's sake. You already had a gangster as your lawyer and he didn't have contacts to hide your money properly?

Jesse wanted to leave. The money was just about having enough to be able pay that guy to make him disappear. If that guy had just given him the 1800 (which Jesse knew wasn't going to happen), he wouldn't have even cared about the rest of the third.

He can get some job in Alaska and make a simple living, he is a broken human at that point, he doesn't care about being rich, he cares about being free.

Jesse never cared about the money. He left it lying around his house when it was an open drug den and eventually through a couple of million dollars into the street.

Hard to remember that guy was once a fashion model.

It was also a bit annoying they used all these flashbacks to shove in as many old characters as possible instead of creating a compelling new storyline.

Didn't the parents have some money in that safe or the house? If Jesse only cared about the $1800 he could have sold the car or steal something valuable from his parent's house instead of walking into a room with 5 possibly armed abd drugged men.

It's also weird that he basically paid $250k for a ride to Alaska. Aren't these communities in Alaska really small and they all know each other? I always wonder how it works with a new identity? You get a new social security number, a driver's license and a new family story but isn't it suspicious if someone with no credit history, no bank account, no 401k, no (high school) diploma, no work history, no car insurance history or (today) no social media history etc. suddenly shows up in your community?

I thought it came off like a bad episode of Orange is the New Black with all those fucking flashbacks.

They won’t be able pull off flashbacks in any new movies. The characters are already too old for the flashbacks.

I liked the movie but some of it felt off. The flashback scene in the dinner looked like an outtake.

I think if the do a new series with Jesse in Alaska, the need to leave Breaking Bad behind.

R60 They’ll never leave Breaking Bad behind because it’s the most interesting and engrossing iteration of the story. Let’s face it, Walter White makes Vince’s work. That’s why there isn’t that big of an audience for BCS beyond the diehard fans, because the thing that made Breaking Bad a great story and made all the characters interesting was the tale of Walter White and his descent into moral decay. Jesse isn’t interesting enough for a whole series, but even if they did, they’d have to keep the Breaking Bad ties. Nobody’s interested in the story if Walter isn’t involved in one way or another.

Does Plemons have health issues? He lost no weight for the flashback scenes in this, Twitter is going in on him for it. But his face and midsection look weirdly puffy - adrenal problems? I don't feel his appearance like this is due to laziness.

He had to beef up for several film roles. He put on a lot of weight for Black Mass. Noah Hawley and the producers of Fargo had him keep on the weight for S2 of Fargo because it fit his character. I think he did lose some weight, but it was also necessary for his role in The Iriishman. I don't think Vince gave him enough time before principle filming on El Camino began for him to shed a significant amount of weight.

He was brilliant in El Camino. Todd was even creepier. His scenes with Aaron Paul were a highlight. I feel bad for him that he's getting shit on.

True r63, could be. Black Mass and F2 were 2-3 years ago though. He didn't need to be huge for The Irishman. He looks terrible and frankly pasty/sickly at a lot of public events lately, I sense he's not feeling well. He's too dedicated an actor to simply let himself go due to sloth.

Yes, Holly is Walt's baby daughter. It's also the name of Vince GIlligan's girlfriend/partner.

I want to see a movie about Skylar and the family.
