On August 4th, 1992, Matthew Sprouse and Melanie Wright welcomed their twin sons into the world. With Dylan Sprouse born first and his twin brother Cole Sprouse coming fifteen minutes later, the brothers grew up to be adorable.

A former drama teacher, actor, and painter, Wright had a love for being artistic. With that in mind, that appears to be the reason Wright thrust Cole Sprouse and Dylan Sprouse into the acting world when they were eight months old.

When Cole Sprouse grew up and was old enough to talk for himself and reflect on his life, he looked back on Wright's decision to have her sons become child actors. During an appearance on "The Diary of a CEO" podcast, Cole Sprouse spoke about what he believes his mom's motivations for making her sons act were.

“It made a lot of financial sense for her to put us into acting. I think it satisfied some sort of narcissism she probably had in order to be recognized as this sort of artistic success. She was a wonderful painter, so she always wanted some sort of artistic recognition and validation. But as time went on, I think the entertainment industry just kind of broke her.”

Unfortunately for Cole and Dylan Sprouse, their relationship with their mother deteriorated over time. As a result, their father eventually filed for and received sole custody of the Sprouse twins for reasons that Cole Sprouse explained during a March 2023 podcast appearance.

“This industry encourages the worst qualities of you as a person: selfishness, greed. A lot of these things that we have come to know as cardinal sins. It’s one of those things that encouraged a kind of selfishness that’s directly opposed to the fundamental idea of motherhood."

Sprouse continued, “And as I grew older, in my case the court had to step in and send my brother and I towards my father, who’s an incredible guy."

During his aforementioned appearance on "The Diary of a CEO" podcast, Cole Sprouse elaborated on why he thinks his father getting sole custody was a good thing. According to Cole Sprouse, his mother had traits that made her a bad parent in his view.

“That selfishness is something the legal system also observed and said that she was unfit, and I think as I have aged I’ve looked back on a lot of circumstances of that entire environment and I see a person that grapples with mental illness, drug abuse, but primarily narcissism."

Cole Sprouse continued, “A wicked narcissism. The inability to perceive anything out of your own perspective, and that just doesn’t work with being a mother, with being a family in general.”

Given Cole Sprouse's comments about his mom, it likely won't surprise anyone they don't have a relationship. However, Cole Sprouse has revealed that not having a relationship with his mom is very damaging for him.

"It’s probably the greatest wound in my life, and also the greatest driving force for my continuing in this industry. I miss her a lot. She was an incredibly beautiful and artistic woman.” During Cole Sprouse's appearance on the "Call Her Daddy" podcast, he blamed his mom's addiction and mental health issues for their relationship falling apart.

"I think if anyone knew the kind of woman she was, they could have said it would have gone the exact same way. I am remorseful in very many ways that she wasn't able to get out of it, but I don't blame her at all."
