The cringe-inducing pictures at AMC on the step and repeat in their Pepto pink getups, talk about a turnoff. They are the same as straights with the Transformers & Marvel shit. I’d say about 95% of male doll collectors are gay. Most of the straight guys who collect ‘dolls’ collect 1/6 scale action figures (i.e. dolls marketed toward guys). Just like everywhere else in the gay community there’s a hierarchy of gays, in the doll world. A-gays at the Barbie (NBDCC) convention have private little parties where all sorts of frolicking takes place. Believe it or not, it comes down to looks, money, or influence just like everywhere else with the usual exclusion factors. Barbie is considered pedestrian by many collectors, but it’s where most people started out.

I’m not into dolls. But the Barbie movie is not vacuous, it has substance, it’s about something. Strange to hear criticism of this movie as silly by people who haven’t seen it alongside criticism by people who only wanted a silly movie, but got annoyed at an intelligent and sharply written deconstruction of the myth of Barbie. It’s almost as if you have to know what you’re talking about before offering opinion as fact.
