I find drinking to be off-putting. The taste, the odor, the way it dehydrates you, everything about it is gross.

I don't like it either. It tastes bad and smalls bad, and it's a very bad high compared to other drugs that will remain nameless.

I'm with ya, OP. I'm a supertaster, so all alcoholic drinks taste like cleaning fluid to me. I can't comprehend how anyone could enjoy swallowing that down. I suppose if the taste of ethanol isn't so overwhelming, others can detect other stuff, but to me it's like sipping Pine-Sol. Ugh.

Philistines—the lot of you.
| by Anonymous | reply 5 | July 29, 2018 7:34 PM |
I agree OP.
Since discovering xanax several years ago, I almost never drink except the occasional glass of wine with dinner.
Some wine is lovely. But beer and hard liquor tastes like shit.
And xannies have no calories!

There’s a gene that makes alcohol taste bad and my sister and I must have it. I’ve never liked the taste and it gets worse with every sip.
I took a bunch of wine tasting classes and I couldn’t taste any of the shit they were talking about, just bitter, nasty alcohol.
My sister says the same thing. My brother on the other hand has no problem with the taste. The only thing I can stand are sweet alcohol drinks

Consider yourself fortunate, OP.

First thing I thought to post when I saw the thread title, R8
| by Anonymous | reply 9 | July 29, 2018 7:48 PM |
I disagree about wine R7.
Most of those snooty "I taste a hint of elderberry and perhaps a hint of leather" fuckers are pretentious and full of shit. But wine can be used in cooking to make sauces, can be paired well with food, and can indeed open up taste buds to make certain flavors more intense. So I'd argue that wine does have a place as part of a meal.
But just drinking by itself? Nope. Hard liquors are way too harsh, and beer--tastes like shit. I don't care if it is some fancy microbrew from Portland or a Budweiser. It all tastes like piss.
Beer is one of the most naked emperors of all time.
| by Anonymous | reply 10 | July 29, 2018 7:48 PM |
It truly is OP. Its a downer as well. I only drink occasionally now.

i'm with you, OP. I drank socially in my 20s (i don't think i was ever really drunk in my life). In the last year one cocktail was enough to feel like shit the morning after. I like a fine wine with a nice meal every once in a while but that's enough. As someone above said, we are lucky.
| by Anonymous | reply 14 | July 29, 2018 8:01 PM |
It all tastes good except absinthe or beer. I'm not fond of gin either so my martinis are vodka based. I hated scotch the first time I tried it but now an aged single malt is heavenly. I can't go near chardonnay anymore but a crisp Sauvignon Blanc with an aroma of cut grass and tart apple is superb in summer. In the winter I love a heavy bodied Merlot or Cabernet. Yes I'm one of those drinkers. Bottoms up bitches!

The only cocktail I have ever really liked is called an Aperol Spritz. It's big in Italy as an aperitif and I discovered it while travelling there.
Equal parts Aperol (orange liqueur), prosecco, and soda. Served with a slice of orange over ice.
It is sweet, orangy, cold, and refreshing. And almost no alcohol taste. Very nice on a hot day.
Other than that...no thanks.
| by Anonymous | reply 16 | July 29, 2018 8:07 PM |
Not me. Like the old saying, when you don't drink that's the best you're going to feel all day.
| by Anonymous | reply 17 | July 29, 2018 8:08 PM |
r16, go to Veneto and try the real spritz. They invented it. Very nice on a hot summer night.

I always thought that scene in Mr. Roberts where they make Scotch using grain alcohol, Coca-Cola, iodine and coal tar hair tonic was right on the money, and they probably wound up with a drink that was at least as good as 90% of the scotches out there.
| by Anonymous | reply 20 | July 29, 2018 8:22 PM |
You’re right, OP. I guess that’s why it never caught on.
| by Anonymous | reply 22 | July 29, 2018 8:26 PM |
R20 knows nothing of scotch.
| by Anonymous | reply 23 | July 29, 2018 8:28 PM |
I've never been drunk. Not for lack of trying. Alcohol makes me sleepy, clumsy, and dull-witted, and I still get hungover in the morning, but that euphoric, inhibitions-out-the-window feeling is something I can only imagine. So yeah I don't drink much. Why bother?
| by Anonymous | reply 24 | July 29, 2018 8:28 PM |
I'm another one with no palate for alcohol, aside from one random day each summer when I suddenly crave a beer. Just for the one day... weird.
But thank heavens I don't like alcohol because I'm the complete opposite with food and will eat anything. If I craved alcohol in addition to foods I'd weigh about 1,000 lbs by now.

just like me R24. I just feel like shit during and after, never had that pleasant phase everybody raves about.
| by Anonymous | reply 26 | July 29, 2018 8:31 PM |
I'm an evolved drinker. Like some of the posters above when I was a young person I couldn't tolerate the taste of anything with alcohol. It totally repulsed me and made me gag. I forced it down a few times but it was very hard and I finally just gave up. I spent my teen age years and my early 20's as a non drinker. I smoke grass but no booze. I was about 23 and I met I guy I liked a lot. He drank plenty. One night he made daiquiris with good dark rum and fresh squeezed lime etc. Shaken and served up in a chilled stemware. I tried and the first one went down okay and of course the next one was easier .... So that's what I drank for almost a year. Many years later I still prefer sweet drinks where I can't taste the booze, but there are plenty to pick from and I don't do without.
| by Anonymous | reply 27 | July 29, 2018 9:13 PM |
The thing about the sweet frou-frou drinks is that--yeah, they're yummy and cover up the alcohol taste--but you will have the worst, pukey hangovers ever.
Learned that in college when I still drank. I would do vodka tonics instead. Never liked the taste, but could get a good buzz without the hangover.
Now I skip all of it aside from the odd glass of wine with dinner.

It's good for you in low daily doses - a glass or two of wine a day, or a shot or two or whatever. There is a small town in Italy which had no fresh water treatment plant, so the entire town drank wine as we drink water. Never a case of heart disease, despite their diets, in several centuries. Also, the Queen Mother drank a water glass full of straight gin daily and look how long she lived.
I am not an avid drinker - maybe one to three per week, unless I'm drinking to get drunk which happens just a handful of times per year. I recommend the following - good stuff:

Just smoke copious amounts of pot, silly. No calories (except due to the muchies), sort of legal in most places, natural, and fun!

It's never been about the taste. Never. And it's never been about being social. It's a drug that delivers pretty consistent results with regular use and the less camouflage, the better.
You have to cut yourself off or give up. Polish off a fifth and you're sweating booze out of your back for the next two days. We won't discuss the shakes...

I only drink infrequently or situationally. What disturbs me about some peoples’ relationship with alcohol is that they use it for emotional or therapeutic therapeutic purposes. For instance, a friend of mine said I should have something to drink for my birthday to unwind. Why do I need alcohol to enjoy my birthday or unwind? She also will drink when she’s stressed. Why not deal constructively with The stressors instead of masking then with a substance?

It's so nice to get stinking drunk sometimes.
| by Anonymous | reply 46 | January 26, 2020 6:22 PM |
Maybe it’s genetic. From the first time I had a beer at 16, I liked it. I don’t like wine or most hard liquor. But with age I’ve had to cut back in calories - so occasionally I make myself drink a vodka soda. But my ideal is a cold, light beer. Of course, I’m Irish so maybe it’s in my genes.

It repels me. I don’t even like it on my man’s breath.
Bought liqueur infused chocolate covered cherries last Christmas to try and be a “sophisticated adult.” They tasted like nail polish smells to me!

I cannot tolerate any more than one drink. That's my limit. I have no tolerance for alcohol whatsoever. Any more than one drink, and I'll fall asleep. However, I want that one drink to be black Demerara rum with coke, on ice. Lemon Hart is my brand.
